Common Fibre Optical Cabling Faults

Detailed below are some common optical fibre scenarios our fibre repair specialists see on a daily basis
Damaged patch leads
Fibre optic patch leads can often get damaged within tight unmanaged patch cabinets.
The most common cause is patch leads being trapped within the cabinet door.
We advise network managers to keep spare patch leads and always replace patch leads as the first point when fault finding.

Handy hint

Use an LED torch to check patch lead continuity.

Faulty media converters
Occasionally media convertors or Gbic cards fail causing the fibre circuit to fail.
PSP keep a good stock of both multimode and single mode media converters that will get you up and running until your own hardware can be replaced.

Badly installed fibre patch panels
If a fibre cable is not fixed securely within the gland of the patch panel the fibre can be pulled or snagged and broken when other work is being carried out within the communications cabinet.

Broken fibres further down the run
There are many reasons why fibre gets damaged along its route.

The usual reasons are due to cables being dug up during excavation works, pulled down from overhead by high sided vehicles or rodent damage.

Using optimum time domain reflectometer (OTDR) technology PSP can pinpoint a fibre breakage within 1.8 metres of the break.

When the breakage has been identified we can field joint the cable using portable fusion splice equipment ensuring minimal db loss. This means that when we re test the fibre it will still meet the industry standards and the fibre bandwidth will not be compromised.

Fibre Optic Cabling

The wide bandwidth of Optical Fibre offers substantially increased data rates.

The low attenuation of fibre allows far longer cable runs without the need to include repeater equipment.

Optical Fibres are not affected by electromagnetic interference, the elimination of earth loops and signal distortion further enhances reliability and security.

Enhanced data security - copper data cables are prone to signal leak and therefore the possibility of tapping. Fibre cables do not radiate electromagnetic energy - eliminating the threat of tapping.

Fire Test Equipment

Fibre Test Equipment

PSP use the latest core alignment fusion splicers for fibre installation and repair works. For fault finding PSP use quad OTDR equipment combining single mode and multi-mode capabilities.

We use Fluke DTX and DSX cable analysers to record test results for Customers to read in PDF format and to send to system manufactures to scrutinize for warranty application.

All of PSP’s fibre fault finding and test equipment is serviced and calibrated regularly to conform to industry requirements.

Fusion Splicing Process

The Fusion Splicing Process

Fibre Option Fusion Splicing is the process used to join fibres together by using an electric arc to melt two fibres together. This method allows us to repair or extend exisiting cables. We use only the latest equipment to ensure a proper join between fibre cables.

It is possible to pre-empt network issues by having it maintained.

Checking of cables, testing cables and keeping cabinets tidy can all help.

Our trained engineers and test equipment can spot potential problems early and thus reduce down time and network errors.
